Basra Engineering Polytechnic College Holds Discussion Session on the Evolution of Surveying: Past and Present
Under the patronage of the Dean of Basra Engineering Polytechnic College, Assistant Professor Dr. Diyah Kammel Shary, the Scientific Affairs Division, in cooperation with the Department of Surveying Engineering Techniques and the Media and Government Communication Division, organized a discussion session entitled “Surveying: Past and Present.” The session was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Luay Muzahim Abdul Kareem.
The session explored the evolution of surveying practices over the past decades, from traditional methods, manual instruments, and paper maps to the adoption of modern technologies, including advanced surveying equipment, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and digital 3D mapping.
The session also highlighted the role of these technologies in improving measurement accuracy, accelerating fieldwork, and enhancing the efficiency of data collection and analysis. These advancements contribute to the development of engineering and urban construction projects while helping the surveying field keep pace with rapid technological progress.
This event is part of the college’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the scientific and technical knowledge of its staff and students, encourage the exchange of expertise, and highlight the importance of digital transformation in engineering disciplines in line with labor market requirements and recent developments in the field.
