Scientific Seminar at the Technical Technological Institute in Basra Highlights the Dangers of Smoking

Under the patronage of Assistant Professor Dr. Diya Kammil Shary, Dean of the Technical Technological Institute in Basra, the institute— in cooperation with the Basra Health Directorate—organized a scientific seminar entitled “Smoking and Its Harmful Effects”, as part of its ongoing efforts to promote health awareness among students and staff.

The seminar was presented by Dr. Murtadha Hassan Abdul-Sahib, who focused in particular on the use of electronic cigarettes. The lecture shed light on the components of e-cigarettes and the various health risks they pose—both short-term and long-term—especially their harmful impact on the lungs. The session emphasized the importance of avoiding the use of such devices to protect public health.

In addition, the seminar explored the health, psychological, and economic dimensions of smoking, presenting the latest statistics and scientific studies that underscore its serious dangers. Environmental and social impacts of smoking were also addressed.

The event was attended by the Dean of the Institute, the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, and the Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, along with a number of faculty members and staff. The audience showed strong engagement through discussions and interventions that highlighted the need for increased awareness on the risks of smoking and effective strategies to curb its spread—particularly among youth.

This seminar reflects the institute’s commitment to organizing scientific and educational activities that contribute to building a sustainable academic and healthy environment, while also supporting national efforts to combat harmful social phenomena.
